District leader joins physical education challenge promoting courage and collaboration

Less than a week after Staples High School sophomores became the first student-led belay team at the school to complete the “Leap of Faith” challenge, Superintendent of Schools Thomas Scarice accepted their invitation to join them—literally taking the leap himself.

The “Leap of Faith,” a centerpiece of Staples’ outdoor challenge course, asks participants to climb a 25-foot pole and leap toward a suspended target while classmates manage the safety belay ropes below. Earlier this month, a sophomore physical education class made district history as the first group of students to lead the activity, demonstrating exceptional communication, teamwork, and trust.

When Superintendent Scarice returned to the course, the same students took charge of the belay system—this time supporting their district leader. Guided by Staples’ physical education staff, the students once again showcased the maturity and confidence that earned them the opportunity.

“In many ways, this ropes course mirrors life itself. The courage to take a risk, the trust to depend on others, and the resilience to get back up when you slip, these are the very skills our students will need in the world beyond high school. As we move toward becoming an AI-powered, human-centered district, programs like this remind us that technology will never replace the human qualities that matter most, courage, empathy, and collaboration. Experiences like this don’t just build stronger students; they build stronger people.”Scarice said after his jump. “The students handled every detail with professionalism and care. It’s one thing to talk about leadership; it’s another to live it.”

The Staples High School challenge course, part of the school’s experiential physical education program, emphasizes leadership, problem-solving, and peer support. The superintendent’s participation underscored the program’s community focus and the district’s commitment to experiential learning that extends beyond traditional classroom walls.
