Sophomore students at Staples High School recently reached new heights—literally—during a physical education class that became the first student-led belay group to complete the “Leap of Faith” on the school’s outdoor challenge course.
Typically a teacher-led activity, the “Leap of Faith” requires participants to climb a 25-foot pole, leap toward a suspended target, and rely on their classmates below for safety and support through a belay system. This time, under close supervision, students took the lead—operating the belay ropes themselves after demonstrating strong communication, teamwork, and safety skills.
The Staples challenge course, part of the school’s experiential physical education program, helps students develop leadership, resilience, and collaboration—skills that extend well beyond athletics. The success of this sophomore group marked a milestone for the program and highlighted the strong sense of community built through shared experiences.
