DEIB NEWS
November is Native American Heritage Month, which celebrates the traditions, languages and stories of Native American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian and Island communities. Before colonization, indigenous people across North America spoke more than 300 distinct languages, many of which are still spoken. Many common English words come from Native American languages, including words for food (chocolate, hickory, and squash), animals (coyote, moose, and raccoon), and objects (moccasin, toboggan, and tomahawk). Many of our place names in our area have Indigenous roots: Quinnehtukqut (Connecticut), Saugatuck, and Compaug (Compo). Click here to discover words from the Algonquian language family, of which the majority of tribes in our area spoke, that we continue to use in English today.
The information above is developed in concert with the WPS administration to highlight the district’s DEI&B core values.
