Mathematics Competition

 

All interested Staples High School students are invited to take part in the 2024 American Mathematics Competition (AMC) 10/12 program sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA).  The exam is a 25- question, 75-minute, multiple choice examination in high school mathematics designed to promote the development and enhancement of problem-solving skills.

The test will be administered digitally, students will test on their own laptop computer in school.  It is recommended to take the competition on an updated version of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge on a laptop device (not a mobile phone or tablet).

In the Think/Ask classrooms of the Library Learning Commons (LLC)

Arrive early, the test begins promptly at 8:00am

Awards are given to high scoring students in each school.  This exam is the first in a series of competitions that eventually lead all the way to the prestigious Mathematical Olympiad in the Spring.

Interested students should contact Mrs. McCarthy in-person (room 1048) or by email skmccarthy@westportps.org to register, no later than November 8, 2024.  Requests for students with IEPs or 504s that have accommodations for timing extensions need to be received by Mrs. McCarthy no later than November 1st. Come by anytime from 7:30 am to 3:00pm.

Yesterday, Staples High School seniors participated in "Invest in Yourself," a comprehensive, day-long program designed to help students build practical skills as they prepare for life after high school. Through a Financial Reality Fair and a series of health and wellness workshops, the program gave students hands-on experience with the kinds of decisions they will soon face as young adults.

A team of students from Staples High School’s Financial Decision Making course earned second place at the Connecticut State Finals of the National Personal Finance Challenge, held March 31 at Synchrony in Stamford. The Staples team, consisting of seniors Justin Halky, Ford Epstein, Patricio Garcia, and Kai Schwartz, advanced to the state finals through earlier rounds of competition, demonstrating strong knowledge of personal finance concepts along with collaboration, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

Staples High School proudly celebrated two exceptional seniors at the Connecticut Association of Schools (CAS) 31st Annual High School Arts Banquet, held March 30 at the Aqua Turf Club. Representing the very best of Staples’ artistic community, Harry McLaughlin was recognized in Visual Arts, and Eva Slossberg was honored in Music & Theater.
