Community Education on the Connection Between the Mind and the Body

March 23, 2016 at Staples High School from 6:00 - 8:00 pm

On March 23, 2016 Dr. John Medina, author of the New Times best-selling Brain Rules (and several other books), will be speaking in Westport for an evening community event to educate parents, students, staff, community members on the connection between the mind and body! Please see instructions below to register.

Dr. John Medina is a New York Times Bestselling author who presents around the world. Aside from being a best-selling author and speaker, Dr. Medina is a developmental molecular biologist and founding director of two brain research institutes. As stated in his book, Brain Rules, "most of us have no idea what's really going on inside our heads. Yet brain scientists have uncovered details every business leader, parent, and teacher should know - such as the brain's need for physical activity to work at its best. How do we learn? What exactly do sleep and stress do to our brains?" In his work, Dr. Medina explains how exercise improves cognition; every brain is wired differently; we are designed never to stop learning and exploring; and more. Brain Rules are things we know for sure, and John Medina explains what we might do with that knowledge.

The benefits of bringing a speaker such as Dr. Medina into Westport will have an immediate impact on all stakeholders in the community as well as yield long lasting dividends for years to come. Providing the opportunity to educate parents, administrators, staff, students and the community at large on the physiological makeup of our brains and how we can maximize learning and instruction. We expect the experience to result in continued support of our Health and Physical Education programs, a broader understanding of how (and why) movement may be incorporated in schools, homes, or workplaces, and an increased awareness on the benefits of exercise and movement in the general community.
