Health & Physical Education
Department Chair: Christine Wanner cwanner@westportps.org 203-3412429
Students are provided with information related to fitness, health, decision making, setting goals, activity selection and methods in developing their own personal physical education fitness program. As all students enter Staples High School, we as a department ensure that the transition for students and parents is as smooth and effortless as possible. To aid in this process, the courses, policies, procedures, staff, and general school information needed to be successful during a student’s time at Staples is made readily available. The Health and Physical Education Program at Staples High School is dedicated to the lifelong goal of fitness and health. While enrolled in the Staples High School Health and Physical Education programs, students will be introduced and exposed to activities that promote health and physical literacy, lifelong wellness and encourage lifetime activity. Our goal as a department is for students to become competent in all activities; and proficient in the activities they choose to pursue through high school and beyond.
We wish all of our students the best of luck as they learn and grow intellectually, socially, emotionally, and physically through the Staples High School system!
“It’s about enabling each student to maintain a physically-active lifestyle forever. It means emphasizing fitness and wellbeing, not athleticism. It eliminates practices that humiliate students. And it assesses students on their progress in reaching personal physical activity and fitness goals. A [quality] program exposes kids to the fun and long-term benefits of movement – it’s really that simple.”
