Alternative High School Diploma Options

Not all students follow the same K-12 educational plan. Students and families may wonder what other options are available to attain the equivalent of a high school diploma. If you have questions about options listed below, please contact your school counselor or college and career center coordinator, Sandra Zeigler.

Connecticut Adult Education offers three distinct pathways for students. Each of these options is available to Westport residents through Stamford’s Office of Adult and Continuing Education. The programs offered include:

Adult High School Credit Diploma

The Adult High School Credit Diploma is the same as a diploma awarded by any other Connecticut public high school. The requirements for graduation are equivalent. Credits are awarded through classroom instruction and online learning. Applicants must be at least 17 years-old (with parent permission). This program runs on a semester basis with application deadlines in August and January.

Prepare For The GED Test

This program prepares learners to pass the four-part, computer-based GED exam to earn a State of Connecticut diploma. Students receive academic instruction in addition to the basic computer skills needed for the exam. Applicants must be at least 17 years-old and officially withdrawn from school for at least six months. This program runs on a semester basis with application deadlines in August and January.

National External Diploma Program (NEDP)

The National External Diploma Program (NEDP) assesses the high school level skills of adults and out-of-school youth. The NEDP evaluates the reading, writing, math, and workforce readiness skills of participants. The program awards a traditional diploma and is designed for self-directed youth and adults with life and work experiences. Applicants must be at least 17 years-old (with parent permission). This program has rolling admissions throughout the year.
