The Staples High School community inspires learning, fosters integrity, and nurtures empathy.

Course Selection and Scheduling

Course selection at Staples is done on an individual basis. Students meet one-on-one with their school counselor to select courses based on a student’s individual academic progress, interests, and post-high school goals. In order to make the most of these meetings, students should review the course catalog, teachers’ recommendations, and contact their school counselor and/or classroom teachers with any questions. Remember that your school counselor can help balance your schedule by considering the big picture: academics, extracurricular activities, family and social life, and health.

In planning a course of study for the next year, during family discussions, students should consider the following:

  • Recommendations made by teachers
  • Successes and difficulties in current courses and courses previously taken
  • Balancing school, extracurricular, and personal commitments
  • Course descriptions in the course catalog and as presented by teachers
  • Level of intrinsic motivation
  • Courses that might be taken purely for enjoyment and personal interest
  • Graduation requirements
  • NCAA eligibility
  • Possible college majors/career paths

  • Completed schedules are available for students in June. Students then have an opportunity to meet with their school counselor individually to resolve any scheduling issues.
